Back in the Chicago days, I had the chance to get to know Kaiti and Chris when they were getting to know each other, and this last new years, I was blessed to be a part of their wedding! Sometimes, on some days, we cannot help but smile. We cannot help that our thoughts and feelings need some sort of expression, and so they manifest themselves in the joy on our face. Sometimes I tell my clients to give me a serious look. On this day, I gave up, because I knew that this was a day on which they could not help but smile.

Sansanee and Ethan’s Thailand Wedding Teasers

Big hair. Bling. A sword. Thai food. And lots and lots of love. What more could a couple ask for?

Sansanee and Ethan got married in Lamphun, Thailand (an hour outside of Chiangmai) a few days after Christmas. In the midst of remembering and celebrating the incarnation, they themselves participated in the birth of something new and beautiful.

Weddings in the winter are nice. They break up the dry spell and keep me on my toes. I get to shake the dust off my camera and climb out of hibernation. But a wedding in Thailand is a wonderful treat. Warm weather, lovely friends, and a big big family treated me as their own. More to come soon :).

Kevin and Ellen’s Traditional Chinese Wedding in New Jersey

Back in August, I had the chance to do an engagement shoot for Ellen and Kevin, even though they had been engaged for some time. I flew back to New Jersey to shoot their Traditional Chinese wedding. I’ll save the cultural details for another day, but suffice it to say, Chinese weddings are loaded with symbolism, gift giving, and family. Tea is served to family and friends, colors and gifts all have meanings, and the banquet is really just an excuse to have a huge party with lots of food and games :). Lucky for the two of them, Ellen’s Godmother (bless her heart) helped them navigate through the rituals (“Two hands!!”). And naturally, having grown up by the shore, they were drawn back to the ocean for pictures :). Congrats, Ellen and Kevin! You guys were a blast!

A Deserted Lot And a Lot of Love

Kevin, Ellen and I were driving around looking for spots where we could take some wedding shots. We had about 2.5 hours to cruise and take it easy. (Sidenote for all you brides: One of the best things you can do is to give your photog a good amount of time for pictures. It’s less stressful for everyone involved, and the images will be worth it.) Kevin mistakenly turned down this road and was in the process of backtracking when I saw the empty lot. I announced, “Let’s stop here!” And stop we did.

One of the things that Scott Jarvie taught me back when I was working with him was that it doesn’t take a breathtaking backdrop to make a sweet image. Lighting is important, and if you frame the shot well, you can make a lot out of nothing. The following two images (as well as the one in the teaser) were shot from the empty lot. Ellen and Kevin were incredulous about the spot (and the minor trespassing…) but it goes to show that a little goes a long way :).
